1 Transmission of power through belt

Transmission of power in belt drive:

Power transmission through belt drive is the product of difference between tensions in the tight side and slack side and the linear velocity of belt.

P = (T2-T1)/v

Where T2 = tension in the tight side

              T1 = tension in the slack side

                v = wr, linear velocity of belt

              w = speed of wheel (rad/s)

r = radius of wheel

If there is friction between belt and pulley, the tension in belt on both sides of pulley are different. Then, the ratio of tensions is given as

T2/T1 =eµθ

Where µ = Coefficient of friction

       θ = Angle of contact between belt and pulley
